Is laterality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia a reliable prognostic factor? French national cohort study.

International audience; Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess whether the laterality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) was a prognostic factor for neonatal survival.Methods : This was a cohort study using the French national database of the Reference Center for Diaphragmatic Hernias. The principal endpoint was survival after hospitalization in intensive care.We made a comparative study between right CDH and left CDH by univariate and multivariate analysis. Terminations and stillbirths were excluded from analyses of neonatal outcomes.Results: A total of 506 CDH were included with 67 (13%) right CDH and 439 left CDH (87%). Abstract  Extra-oesophageal autonomic dysfunction in idiopathic achalasia is not well documented, due to contradictory results reported. We aimed to study the cardiovascular and pancreatic autonomic function in patients with idiopathic achalasia. Thirty patients with idiopathic achalasia (16M/14F; 34.5 ± 10.8 years) and 30 healthy volunteers (13M/17F; 34.8 ± 10.7 years) were prospectively studied. Diaphragmatic paralysis following minor cervical trauma.

2007

Two asthmatic patients developed unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis from phrenic nerve injury, in one case following cervical chiropractic manipulation and in the other after a motorcycle accident. Both presented with increased dyspnea and orthopnea. Diagnosis, severity, and level of the lesion were established by neurophysiological methods, which are preferred to chest radiography and diaphragmatic ultrasonography. In spite of only partial electrophysiological recovery of the nerve, both patients were asymptomatic 1 year later.

Breath analysis holds great promise for real-time and non-invasive medical diagnosis. Thus, there is a considerable need for simple-in-use and portable analyzers for rapid detection of breath indicators for different diseases in their early stages. Autonomic dysfunction in patients with achalasia.

It has been previously shown that patients with achalasia may have motor abnormalities of the stomach, small bowel and biliary system. This study investigates whether a disturbance of extraintestinal autonomic function occurs. Autonomic function studies were performed in 15 patients with achalasia and 15 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
